Telio Breakthrough Designers Competition

2014

Top 25 Finalists

The Telio Breakthrough Designers Competition is a National Fashion Design competition created by a renowned textile company Telio based out of Montreal. Fayann was picked as one of the top seven inspiration boards at Ryerson University to get sent to Montreal. Designed a Contemporary Women Wear outfit consisting of Telio textiles based on this years competition theme “Textures”. She made it to the Top 25 finalist stage out all of Canada to create her design. She travelled to Montreal in February 2014 to display garments on the runway at a Montreal Fashion event for final round.

" For this design, I was inspired by the layers and textures of pinecones and acorns seen on the autumn floors. With the fall season in mind as an incredible time to play with layers, I designed a layered wool coat that can be converted into a bolero jacket. The bottom two layers of the coat are attached by a zipper and snaps, which can detach to make a smaller jacket. The double layered sleeves are removable as well, to allow the wearer to have shorter look. Alongside the coat, I designed a petal crop top as well as a salt and pepper tweed panel skirt, which split towards the hem to allow more movement in the leg. "

  • Fayann was featured on the Official Telio Canada blog about her design process for the competition.

Coordinating Suit

The purpose of this project was to explore the relationship between a print and a co-ordinating colour, through a ladies unlined suit jacket and tailored pants. while balancing the line between print and design, this outfit portrays the assigned country of inspiration, which can be seen though the contoured waistline of the paisley pants and the chiffon back detail that represent indian architecture. The shawl collar which replicates the look of a traditional indian groom and the chiffon yoke resembles the traditonal bridal sari.

Daywear Dress

This was Fayann's first year women's daywear dress called, "Riding 'Round Town". It was inspired by bicycles and the connection between them and her childhood. With an asymmetrical front button closure, the black lines along the dress represent the spools of a bike wheel, which continue on in the back. There are side seam pockets for extra functionality, and cap sleeves for a more youthful take on a day dress. The contrast fabric gives the dress a playful twist and a tiny punch of colour and the buttons are chosen to resemble bike lights.
